My Dear Reader Letter
Dear Readers,
At this point of time you’ll be hearing a little bit about me and my journey through my writing. Oh, I forgot my manners, my name is Monica and I’m enrolled in English 98 at EVCC. I have many struggles in my life, being in foster care with a foster mom who has two kids of her own since I was 13th.
My biggest goals in life are I want to help people. Hopefully later in my life I will become a homicide detective, but the way I’m heading I don’t think so. This quarter I struggler and I got frustrated and I wanted to give up in English 98. I did not turn in a lot of my home work and I did not turn in one of my first draft of one of my major writing assignment. It feels like I’m not getting any better, but people comment on the good things about my writing. So I guess I’m getting better. After this quarter I realize I should be stronger, not give up and do my homework.
In my past experience in my English I hated to write, because I could not express my self. I was scared what other people thought of me and I was scared to get something wrong. Now after being in English 97 and English 98 I feel more confident. I can do group work and let people read my essays, because now I know there are a lot of people out there who have the same problem. Hey, look I’m writing this dear reader letter with out getting frustrated and giving up and I’m not going to worry who is going to read this!
Through out the quarter we have been doing a lot of work. The pieces that I’m going to talk about in my e-portfolio are in the following order; first major writing assignment, second my subsequence visit and the final piece is my inventory of being.

Introduction to: Discrimination
My fist piece is my definition essay on “Discrimination” it was my second major writing assignments. I wrote my first draft around May 6th. The reason I choose “Discrimination” because it showed how I went through the writing process and how it develop and revise through others. Here is an example “There are different kinds of discrimination; how people dress, if they are pretty, or not, how much money one might have, and race. With each of these there can be unfairness, bias, intolerance and prejudice.” I also pick this because I know there is a lot of discrimination in the world today. My strengths on this piece are how I choose a hard topic and I could write about it.
Discrimination
There is a lot of discrimination in the world today and it affects a lot of people. Discrimination has been around for many years now. The formal definition of discrimination is; treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination. The power of making fine distinctions; discriminating judgment: She chose the colors with great discrimination. (WWW.dictionary.com) There are different kinds of discrimination; how people dress, if they are pretty, or not, how much money one might have, and race. With each of these there can be unfairness, bias, intolerance, and prejudice.
Through out school and some jobs people might show bias, because how others choose to dress. In school it can be really bad, because there are a lot of different types groups. The emus who are depress and they don’t care about how they dress. Then you have the gothic people that wear black and dark clothing. There are weird people who wear clothes like back in the 50’s that smell like they have not taken a bath in years. Next you have the jocks who wear sporty type clothing. They also can be categorized as part of the preppy people who wear the expensive clothing and they look perfect every day. All these types of groups are like a killer fish in a big social class tank who feed on every one. In some jobs people discriminate against people’s dress who can’t afford the right job clothes.
Throughout the years people have made fun of others who are ugly, or if they have a lot of pimples on their face, or if they don’t wear make-up. People show prejudice against others if they are over weight and some times if they are to skinny. As a society we seem to be consumed with judgment towards others. And in doing this we discriminate.
Money is a big thing people are prejudice against. To some people money buys happiness. If someone has a lot of money they can buy what they want like nice clothes, houses and cars. People who struggle to make a little money do not have these opportunities. They can not spend it on nice clothes, nice houses and cars. To the rich people look down or are prejudice towards the poor and in reverse, poor people can show a kind of prejudice against the rich.
Nowadays there is still intolerance against people’s race. Unlike before, African American people could not sit with white people or socialize with them. Some people in the work force intolerance against white people, because they think that white people always get the good jobs first. This is not always true. Then there is the thought of Hispanic people, who work for very little money, and people hire them, this is another type of intolerance.
When we look at discrimination, we must look at unfairness, bias, intolerance, and prejudice. Just the sound of the word discrimination makes one become defensive. It is like being accused of a wrong doing. But if someone says it is unfair to judge a person for the way they dress does it seem as harsh. What about having a bias against people according to looks and weight? Can prejudice against those with or with out money? Finally we come to intolerance of race or ethnic background? Each of these words can do as much if not more harm then the word discrimination, but they affect us differently.
Finally, looking at the word discrimination, think of the definition, in favor of or against someone, place or thing, it could raise or lower the esteem of an individual. Or how the word is used could bring about fear of harming or being harmed. Introduction to: Hunt for a Four Year College
My second piece is compare and contrast “Hunt for a Four Year College” it is my first major writing assignments. I did my first draft around the 14th of April. The reason I choose “Hunt for a Four Year college” it showed how I used specifically variety of sentence structures. And not use the 2nd person as much. Here are some examples “University (WWU) is located in Bellingham about two hours away from Everett. I like the fact that it is on the Puget Sound. When the rays of the sun hit the surface of the water it is a sight to see.” I also pick this because I felt like I did a real good job for my first writing assignments of the quarter and my writing matured in this essay.
Hunt for a Four Year College
As most peoples first year of community college slowly creep to an end, they have some questions flowing through their heads. Most of them have to do with if they want to go to a four year college. Where should they go? What type of four year college are they looking for? Some people can’t decide if they want to go to a college that has a large campus. These are some of the many questions that they must ask themselves before they can take the next step towards a four year college. I am asking myself these questions too.
I have found interests in two universities. The first one is Western Washington University and the second one is Eastern Washington University. These two universities have programs I like, but they are completely opposite when comparing the both to see which one fits me the best.
The location would be key factor in comparing different schools. Western Washington University (WWU) is located in Bellingham about two hours away from Everett. I like the fact that it is on the Puget Sound. When the rays of the sun hit the surface of the water it is a sight to see. There are many beaches and parks that are near, like Birch Bay. While driving through the back roads students can see the beauty of the Orcas Islands. WWU is also located near Canada, so anytime I want to leave the country I can just hop in my car or take the bus.
On the other hand, Eastern Washington (EWU) is located in Cheney near Spokane. It’s about 6 hours away from Everett. This would definitely be a factor that might make people not choose EWU. Since some people hate being by themselves and this could be hard. On one side, it could also be a place for people to grow. Being on that side of the state would teach people to find themselves and they would learn how to survive on their own, because EWU is in the middle of nowhere.
The city of Cheney (EWU) was the campus I felt more at home with, because I felt like I could know everyone. EWU is close to a few attractions. One is being Spokane, which is big as Seattle. It also has a theme and water park that might attract many tourists. Every time I would go there for basketball camp I had a good time. This makes me feel a little closer to EWU.
The less is better. EWU had a total of 9,838 undergraduates and WWU had a total of 13,099 undergraduates. I figure that it would be fewer students in each class. There would be a better opportunity to do one-on one with the professor if I needed help. Both of those numbers mean that I could actually be able to name most of my peers; unlike large campus where there’s so many students to keep track of, that not even the professor knows everyone’s name.
Money can be a factor when choosing a school. Medium sized public schools also mean that tuition will be less expensive than other schools that are larger and private. For example, WWU $5,301 is for tuition and fee, $7,090 is for room and board equaling a total of $12,391. EWU on the other hand is only $4,847 for tuition and fee, and $6,433 for room and board combining those two amounts the total would be $11, 280.
It is important to look into a four year colleges that have the right classes you’re trying to major in. EWU and WWU have similar class types. They have many varieties of programs that could help people in their line of work.
It is good to research four year colleges beforehand. Now that I’m attending community college I would tell people to start picking out colleges and comparing them earlier. I chose to look at Eastern Washington University and Western Washington University. EWU would be good for me to attend, because it would teach me independence and it has the programs I need. On the other hand, WWU would be a perfect place to go if I decided to major in criminal justice. They have courses there to help me. It’s also located not too far from home.
By doing this assignment I have learned that finding reasons for picking a certain college is not as easy as it seems. Some colleges don’t have everything you’re looking for. All colleges will have some things you don’t like. EWU for example, is a little far away and WWU it has a higher tuition then EWU. These are few things that make picking the right college really difficult. Before I use to say I want to go to “so and so” college, because they have a good basketball team or that’s where all my friends are going. I now realize you don’t base your decisions on friends and basketball. I need to look at the hard facts, like career interests, size, and of the college.

Introduction to: Subsequence Visit
My third piece is my “subsequence visit” journal it was my forth journal of the quarter I wrote this on may 10. The reason I choose this because I thought this was analytical and how it impacts how I think is I had to remember why back then. I also wrote a lot about this topic. Here is an example what I am talking about “it was our first visit to Okanagan it was some time around August 2003 we camp in the middle of the mountain for four days without running water.” I had to think back the first time I went camping and also the second time I went camping to compare each time I went.
Subsequence Visit
It was our first visit to Okanogan with another family who owned the property it was sometime around August 2003 we camp in the middle of the mountain for four days without running water. This effect how long we stayed. Every day was a blast we found places to go swimming and new trails to go four wheeling. It got hot during the day and sometimes it got cold. We made skits up and the parents watched around the fire. The not so good part is not having water to take a shower so we went four days with out showing. On the second to the last day we went to the Omak stamped race it was so much fun. It was sad to leave but we new we would be back the same time next year. The following year we travel up those mountain this time it was different we had running water, so we stayed there longer and we could do much more fun things. We did different activities like going ghost town hunting, we found this place called Chesaw it was really scary the population was 36. We went to the same rodeo. I think the worse part is leaving because we had so much fun.
Introduction to: Inventory of being
My last piece is my “Inventory of being” it was the first home work assignments I wrote this around April 4th. The reason I choose this piece is because it representative me and how I am me. Here are some examples “I am a student and I am half way to be a homicide detective,” “I hate not being positive,” “I like doing the something every day. I like to follow a pattern.” Another thing why I choose this piece is because I thought I did a decent job explaining what I’m about.

but lately I have been wearing it down because I need a haircut. I have blue eyes.

I am older then my sister Mellissa but I’m not the oldest person with my real
brother and sister
I like antagonizing my sister Mellissa
I like being a friend.
I like playing basketball on a team.

I love not being in love. I just want to have fun.
Later on in my life I hope for a baby girl name Kerstin Lauren but I want to be in
love first.
I hope to have a better life then my real family.
I hope to have a lot of money to support myself.
I believe I can live by myself someday.
Things I don’t understand why can’t I have a decent life.
I don’t understand why someone can’t support their family.
I don’t understand why anyone doesn’t love me.

I hate sitting on the right side of the car. I blame my sister Mellissa.
